The area of Alexandria surrounding Kingstowne and the George Washington Parkway offers some truly unforgettable dining experiences in unique historic settings. Cedar Knoll is a refined restaurant serving French and American cuisine on the banks of the Potomac in the community of Fort Hunt. Cedar Knoll’s outdoor dining area provides exquisite waterfront views while the interior offers an elegant Old World dining experience beneath ornate chandeliers. The building housing Cedar Knoll was built in the early 1800s as a farmhouse on land once owned by George Washington. George Washington’s better-known Mount Vernon Estate also offers upscale dining in the sophisticated historic setting of The Mount Vernon Inn. The Inn has six intimate candlelit dining rooms as well as an outdoor patio. The menu features faithful recreations of the finest in Colonial cuisine. The Hollin Hall shopping center on Fort Hunt Road houses locally-run businesses such as Village Hardware, which specializes in high-quality products and impeccable personalized service. Hollin Hall Variety Store is a delightfully old-fashioned mom-and-pop store that has kept its shelves stacked with all kinds of items since it opened in 1958. Other businesses at the Hollin Hall shopping center include European-style bakery Hollin Hall Pastry Shop and the rustic Mediterranean bistro and wine bar River Bend.

Things to Do

The communities in this area of Alexandria have large parks with gorgeous natural scenery. Spanning more than 1,450 acres, Huntley Meadows Park is the largest public park in Fairfax County. This sprawling green space has more than 10 miles of trails, several observation towers, and hundreds of plant and animal species, including 30 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 600 species of flowers. This beautiful natural area is one of the most popular spots in the country for wildlife photography. Fort Hunt Park on the Potomac River is named after fortifications built during the Spanish-American War. Just north of Fort Hunt Park along the Potomac and George Washington Parkway is the Mount Vernon Estate. This popular tourist attraction was home to George and Martha Washington. Opening the estate to public visitors was a tradition begun by Washington himself. Head to the Mount Vernon Estate in October to sample varietals from 20 local vineyards during the Fall Wine Festival. Attendees of this signature annual event can also enjoy a sunset tour of the estate and live music.
