Vibrant neighborhood surrounded by political landmarks

Capitol Hill is the vibrant center of the D.C. political universe. Much of Capitol Hill followed L’Enfant’s Plan in the 1790s. Featuring street after street of distinctive row houses in a walkable community, newer condominium developments offering stylish living spaces can also be found near the heart of political power. The iconic domed United States Capitol overlooks the neighborhood. Other landmarks include the United States Supreme Court and the Library of Congress. For those who live in this exciting neighborhood, the restaurants of Barracks Row and the vendors at Eastern Market offer lots to enjoy. Capitol Hill is home to many politicos, and its bars and restaurants are often visited by the politically elite.

People & Lifestyle

Capitol Hill is the epicenter of politics and power in the United States, and some areas of the neighborhood are always buzzing with activity. There are also quieter residential sections offering a relaxed lifestyle in one of D.C.’s most sought-after and convenient neighborhoods. Capitol Hill is an incredibly walkable neighborhood with some of D.C.’s best spots to dine and drink.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Barracks Row is home to some of D.C.’s best restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Rose’s Luxury. Specialties at Rose’s Luxury include a range of delicious pasta dishes and catfish served with caviar-topped tartar sauce. Rose’s has long been one of the most talked-about dining destinations in D.C. President Barack Obama once celebrated his birthday here! Next to Rose’s, sister establishment Pineapple and Pearls has earned the rare distinction of two Michelin stars for its sublime prix fixe dinner menu. Pennsylvania Avenue also has a great choice of places to dine and drink. Mr. Henry’s is a lively gay-friendly pub with regular live music. Their menu includes burgers and other gastropub classics, to pair with an excellent craft beer selection. Emilie’s is a market and café by day and one of the capital’s trendiest restaurants by night. The restaurant menu includes small plates and family-sized platters of innovative and globally-influenced New American cuisine. Emilie’s market offers fresh produce and gourmet foodstuffs sourced from local farms along with sourdough bread and other baked goods. Eastern Market is another fantastic local spot to pick up high-quality groceries. Eastern Market hosts a farmers’ market several times per week, with vendors offering excellent meats, cheeses, produce, and handicrafts.

Things to Do

Lincoln Park is the neighborhood’s largest public park. Part of the L’Enfant Plan for Washington, D.C.’s layout, the park features one of the earliest memorials to Abraham Lincoln with a statue built in 1876 to commemorate the abolition of slavery. Another statue honors prominent civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune. Lincoln Park also has tree-shaded lawns and two children’s playgrounds. In October, Hill Fest brings two stages of live music and dance performances to Capitol Hill’s Garfield Park. H Street Festival in September is a huge street party with 14 staging areas spread across 11 blocks. Living in this neighborhood places some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks right on your doorstep. You can visit the United States Capitol to see Congress in session or take a tour of the spectacular Neoclassical Library of Congress and the United States Supreme Court.
