Vibrant historic district with beautiful cobblestone streets

Georgetown is a vibrant historic district with beautiful cobblestone streets and elegant Federalist architecture. This unique and highly walkable neighborhood has a European feel and is an important place in American history. Georgetown was founded in the 1750s, and U.S. presidents from Washington to Obama have dined in its taverns and restaurants. The streets may be steeped in history, but Georgetown is also a lively modern community with many trendy places to shop, dine, and drink. Georgetown’s real estate mix includes gorgeous Victorian and Georgian properties as well as luxurious newer condominium developments along the scenic banks of the Potomac.

Many of the university’s faculty and students live in Georgetown, giving the neighborhood an energetic collegiate atmosphere. Other residents include heavyweight political figures and Washington Post journalists. There is much to see and explore in this picturesque neighborhood—from the waterfront areas along the Potomac and the C&O Canal to the refined shopping and dining on M Street, Georgetown is a fantastic place to visit and live.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Georgetown’s main shopping and dining stretches are centered on M Street. This bustling area is home to a wide variety of stylish boutiques and exceptional restaurants. Bodega serves Spanish wine and small plates. This romantic tapas lounge and wine bar is a great spot for both late-night dining and weekend brunch. Rustic French restaurant La Chaumiere is another excellent choice for date night. This fine-dining staple serves sophisticated French cuisine in a charming setting with exposed wooden beams and a roaring stone fireplace. Bourbon Steak at the Four Seasons Hotel is a high-end steakhouse serving mouthwatering certified Angus steak grilled over an open flame. Their menu also includes farm-to-table charcuterie platters and refined seafood specialties, such as lobster pot pie and ahi tuna tartare. M Street is also a trendy retail destination with lots of stores selling cutting-edge fashion and high-end apparel. Other landmark local restaurants and taverns include Martin’s Tavern on Wisconsin Avenue. Martin’s has been a favorite hangout of Presidents and other members of the political elite since the 1930s.

Things to Do

Dumbarton Oaks Park runs along the northeastern boundary of the Georgetown Historic District. This beautiful park covers 27 acres with ten acres of formal gardens designed in the 1920s by influential landscape architect Beatrix Ferrand. The park was once part of an estate whose grand Federal-style main home now serves as the Dumbarton Oaks Museum with special exhibitions covering a wide range of historical topics. Georgetown Waterfront Park is part of a 225-mile stretch of greenery along the Potomac that runs from Maryland to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. The park offers mesmerizing riverfront views and unique features such as a labyrinth, rain and pollinator gardens, and a fountain that you can splash around in on hot summer days. In September, Taste of Georgetown is a major culinary event that invites attendees to sample signature dishes from 30 of the best local restaurants as well as wine and beer tastings.
